These awards continue an RDS involvement in cattle breeding which began with the first Spring Show on the lawn of Leinster House in 1831. Following on the success of the first RDS Champion of Champions in 2006, the Awards have now grown to include all the major cattle societies.
Each summer leading cattle breeders travel the length and breadth of Ireland to compete at the premier livestock shows. At the end of the season the animals that proved their excellence with numerous show successes are nominated by their cattle breed societies for the RDS Champion of Champions. Each breed’s Champion of Champions receives a cheque for €1,000, an RDS Silver Medal and their breed’s perpetual RDS Spring Show trophy.
The Awards, which encourage innovation and improvement in the Irish cattle breeding sector, are presented annually in early December and have grown into one of the most prestigious awards in the cattle breeding calendar.
